Description

A stunning Sheraton Revival inlaid mahogany breakfront wardrobe dating to the early Victorian period and attributed to Edwards & Roberts. Profusely decorated with fine quality ribbon tied trailing floral marquetry in veneers including satinwood and harewood. The upper door panels each centred with a cartouches inlaid with cherubs in scenes emblematic of the four seasons, the lower with flowering urns, all within a Greek Key design boxwood strung border with further satinwood, box and ebonised banding. The moulded cornice with further Greek key moulding and inlaid with intertwined acanthus leaves within box stringing. The side doors opening to reveal full length handing spaces with original wooden hooks to one side and later brass rails to both, the centre doors with brass moulding rail and opening to a linen press fitted interior with sliding trays (which could be removed to give three larger hanging areas) and above two short and three long graduated drawers with ornate gilt brass handles.

In solid condition with a good original colour and supplied with a working key for the doors, there are marks and signs of age including old repairs to the feet. Dismantles into six sections for moving with the cornice, side sections, upper & lower centre sections all lifting off the plinth base.

Edwards & Roberts were acclaimed English cabinetmakers founded in London in 1845, specialising in marquetry, inlay and ormolu and making reproductions of earlier styles such as their Thomas Hope ebony & brass inlaid mahogany chair in the collection of the V&A Museum. one of the principal London companies working in the taste of the late 18th century. Edwards & Roberts were able to produce superb quality English furniture using some of the finest quality timbers and became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. The company ceased trading in 1899.
