Description

We are offering this very large, hand painted, Royal Dux Porcelain Group, Model No. 10946, which depicts a Bedouin Camel Rider astride his camel, with a young attendant alongside. This piece dates to the period 1919-1939 by its markings, the earlier part of which showed an upsurge in interest in items with an orientalist flavour.

Royal Dux Porcelain was started in 1860 by Eduard Eichler in Duchov, Bohemia and was called Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur. Bohemia became Czechoslovakia, which was firstly controlled by Germany during WWII and then the U.S.S.R., who renamed it Duchovsky Porcelain. In 1990 after the fall of the iron curtain, it became the Czech Republic.

The famous pink triangle mark, as shown on the base of this piece, consists of a piece of thin, pink clay, with Royal Dux Bohemia impressed into it around an acorn, the bottom half of which has the letter E for Eichler impressed. When the Soviets changed the name to Duchovsky Porcelain, the letter became a D.

The work also bears an impressed 'Made in Czechoslovakia' mark, which was used after the export laws, which stated that the country of manufacture had to be shown, came into force in 1918. There is also an impressed Model No. 10946 and underneath this the numbers 7 and 2, which may reflect the colourway of the decoration.
