Portrait Oil On Canvas Possibly Thomas Jefferson
Description
We are offering for sale this very well executed, 19th Century, head and shoulders portrait of a gentleman, clad in a purple dress coat, with sandy waistcoat with a white stock at the neck. He has sunken cheeks, grey hair and piercing eyes, with his hair cut wide over his ears. Altogether a most haunting face. The portrait is by an unknown artist. It was purported by the auction house or the previous owner that it was possibly a portrait of American President Andrew Jackson, but, after some research, we have come to the conclusion that it bears no resemblance to him. However, while doing this research, we looked at portraits of other American Presidents and put forward the theory that this is possibly a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, particularly as depicted in the portrait by Rembrandt Peale, painted in 1800, that hangs in The White House. We leave it to the buyer to decide.
Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. Following the American Revolutionary War and prior to becoming president in 1801, Jefferson was the nation's first U.S. secretary of state under George Washington and then the nation's second vice president under John Adams.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 5/8 inch reeded gilt wooden frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
