Description

We are offering for sale this very well executed still life oil on board by the Royal Worcester Porcelain artist and flower painter George Edward Hundley, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a group of fruit and a bird's nest with five blue eggs in a natural setting below a hedge. There are red and green grapes with vine leaves, peaches, plums, cherries, cobnuts, strawberries and blackberries.

George Edward Hundley was born on 5th December 1841, the son of a gardener. He attended the Government School of Design in Worcester, where he achieved two medals and a prize in the late 1850s for flower drawing. He went to work for Royal Worcester Porcelain and became well known for his flower painting, particularly thistles and heather. If you put his name and Royal Worcester into google images, you can see many examples of his work.

He lived in Worcester for all his life in various addresses and was appointed an Overseer of the Parish of Hallow in 1885. He married his wife Harriet (nee Thornton) in 1863 and they had 10 children (2 died) all of whom apparently worked in the china trade, probably for Royal Worcester, but not as painters. Harriet died in 1890, after which George was looked after by his daughters. He died in the last quarter of 1922 in Worcester.

There is an artist called Henry Hundley, (1840-1903) who was a china painter, who also painted still life oils, and may be related. (Having been contacted by a relative of George Hundley, we have been informed that Henry Hundley was a cousin.)

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/8 inch soft mottled gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
