We aer offering for sale this very well executed large, oval, Pastel Portrait of a Gentleman by the artist J.? Hawkins, who has signed the portrait underneath and dated it 1898. The painting depicts a bust length, three quarter face, portrait of a gentleman of middle years, with a kindly face. He is wearing a dark jacket and wasistcoat, white shirt with high collar and a black cravat tied in a bow.

There is, possibly, an initial in front of the name Hawkins, which could be a J, although there is a stroke next to it, which almost makes it a Y. We have checked both of these initials for similar signatures, and indeed, having drawn a blank, just artists called Hawkins who were living at this date, but have been unable, so far, to identify the artist.

The pastel has been newly double mounted in two-tone, acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a dove grey with ochre lines woodenh frame. It will be supplied with all new brass fittings, new brass picture ware, and will be ready to hang.
