We are offering for sale this expertly executed oval pastel portrait of a gentleman, by the French artist Louis Eugene Coedes, who has signed the pastel to the lower left and dated it 1851. The bust length portrait depicts an aristocratic gentleman with grey and white mutton chop whiskers. He is wearing a black or charcoal grey jacket, pale grey waistcoat and a dark grey stock, held in place with a ruby and gold tie pin. He has a pleasant countenance. Unfortunately, we do not know the name of the sitter.

Louis Eugene Coedes was born in 1810 in Paris. The family is believed to have had Hungarian/Jewish ancestry and settled in the Strasbourg region before 1740. He was a pupil of Leon Coignet and first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831, where he received an honourable mention in 1861. He specialised in portraiture in both oils and pastels, as well as genre and landscapes, according to Benezit, where his biography is listed, although we have found only portraits in more recent auction movements. He died in Paris in 1906. There is one of his portraits in Chartres Museum.

The portrait has been newly triple mounted in three tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 2 1/4" gilt frame with pale grey detailing. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
