Eleanor Winter 1883-1971 Watercolour Still Life

Description
We are offering for sale this very attractive and well executed watercolour still life by the artist Eleanor Winter, who has signed the painting N. Winter in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1904. She signed her paintings N. Winter and is listed as Miss N. Winter in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), with her home address as Carleton Terrace, Penrith. The painting depicts a floral patterned, pottery jug full of wallflowers in tones of chestnure brown and ochre. Just in front of the jug in a pair of tan coloured well used leather gloves, with metal poppers at the side. This is one of a small collection of watercolours by this artist that we will be listing in due course.
Eleanor Winter was born on the 10th March, 1883 in Penrith, Cumberland, the daughter of Harry and Eleanor Winter and they lived in Carleton Terrace, Penrith. Her father was a Corn Merchant and she had two brothers, one became a Doctor and the other a minister. We do not know whether she had artistic training or was self-taught, but we do know that she exhibited a watercolour at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1905.
She married Clifford J. Gudgeon (1880-1955) in 1913, who became the Vicar of St. Lawrence parish church in Appleby, Westmoreland, and were still there in the 1939 Register. However, they later moved to Sussex to Uckfield and Crowborough, where her brother Arthur George (1892-1964) was a GP.
She had two children, a son Henry Noel Clifton Gudgeon in 1915 and a daughter Eleanor Hope Gudgeon (1919-2018). Her son sadly died in Thailand on 15th June 1945, while a Prisoner of War of the Japanese and was a Captain in the 1st Bn. of the Middlesex Regiment, attached to the Malay Regiment. He is buried in the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand. Her daughter died last year at the grand age of 98 in Crowborough. It is highly likely, as these paintings were purchased in the last year in Sussex, that they were in the possession of the family, as one of them has a notation on the back that it belonged to George Winter (1883-1966) Eleanor's other brother, who lived in Penrith his whole life. Eleanor herself died in Uckfield in 1971.
The painting has been newly double mounted and is framed in a 2 1/2" bronze frame, which tones very well with the colouring. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
