Over the years I have been fortunate to own several clocks by the famous maker Thomas Cole and although unsigned I believe that this particular timepiece was made by this eminent maker such is its overall quality, method of construction and type of movement. It would date to the middle of the 19th Century.
As can be seen by the attached images the quality of the engraving is exquisite and the substantial 8 day English balance wheel movement is very finely and individually made for this clock The Sevres style blue ceramic dial depicts a courting couple under the dial with cupid waiting above to send his arrow and is in perfect condition as is the case which retains the virtually all of its original gilding.
I recently sourced this clock from central Europe from someone who too firmly believed that it was made by Thomas Cole who documented to have made a few clocks of this type of case and dial . Everything about this clock is typical of Coles work including the poker style hands . I have listed this item as "Cole style" to be on the side of caution but I have have a serious wager on this clock being made by Thomas Cole and I would welcome any comments by experts and serious collectors.
I am loathe to call any antique as "mint" condition but this clock is as close as it gets . The condition really is exceptional..
The images should show prospective buyers all they need to see but a personal inspection is very welcome .
? ? ? The clock is 8 1/2 inches tall ,It is 7 1/4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep (max). The dial is 5 3/8th tall and 3 1/2 wide
