Description

A finely carved antique dinner gong stand of substantial presence, executed in richly patinated oak and supporting a suspended bronze gong. The architectural frame is elaborately worked throughout, displaying a dense repertoire of relief carving including stylised foliate motifs, rosettes, and mask-like figures to the uprights, lending the piece a strong sculptural character. The cresting rail is particularly notable, centred with a carved figure in a devotional or contemplative pose, flanked by scrolling ornament and incised detailing, while the horizontal beam bears a carved inscription, adding both visual interest and a sense of narrative or symbolism.

The gong itself is circular, with a warm, mellow tone to the metal and a textured, hand-hammered surface that creates a subtle concentric pattern across its face. It is suspended by cord within the frame, allowing free resonance when struck. A beater with a padded head accompanies the piece, hanging conveniently to one side.

The base is equally well considered, with stepped plinths and bold, carved supports that provide both stability and visual weight. The overall craftsmanship suggests a high level of skill, with careful attention to symmetry, depth of carving, and surface finish throughout.
