Description

A highly attractive late 18th to early 19th century Welsh longcase clock by Thomas Webbe of New Quay, housed in a beautifully figured oak case of warm, rich colour and excellent patina.

The hood is surmounted by elegant scroll pediment with central finial, above a glazed door flanked by distinctive barley twist columns. The trunk features a well-figured door framed by further twist columns, standing on a shaped plinth base, all displaying particularly pleasing grain and colour throughout.

The painted dial is especially charming, depicting coastal and rural scenes with an automaton rocking ship to the arch, bringing the piece to life as the movement runs. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial is signed Thomas Webbe, New Quay, and fitted with finely pierced hands.

The eight-day movement strikes on a bell and is driven by a pendulum and weights, with the original style bob present.

A characterful and decorative Welsh longcase clock, combining regional craftsmanship with a delightful animated dial—both a practical timepiece and a striking interior feature.
