Description

A fine Edwardian walnut Dickens desk, dating from the early 20th century, combining practicality with decorative architectural form. This handsome writing desk is raised on slender turned and fluted legs terminating in original brass castors, giving the piece both lightness and mobility.

The desk features a traditional leather inset writing surface, beautifully framed by walnut moulding and surrounded by a series of useful drawers. The arrangement includes a long central drawer flanked by smaller drawers, with further drawers to each pedestal, all fitted with attractive period brass handles. The drawers are well proportioned and provide generous storage for stationery and documents.

Above the writing surface sits a charming raised gallery back with pierced fretwork, incorporating additional small drawers and compartments for pens and writing accessories. The sloping writing section lifts to reveal a fitted interior with pigeonholes and small drawers, making it ideal for organised writing or correspondence.

The desk is further enhanced by open lower shelves within each pedestal, surrounded by decorative fret galleries, providing space for books, papers or decorative objects.

Constructed in warm-toned walnut with attractive figuring, this is a particularly decorative and functional example of the popular Dickens style desk, inspired by late Victorian and Edwardian writing furniture.
