Description

This beautiful and high quality pair of Chinese hand painted and enamelled porcelain vases are from the Republican period, early to mid 20th century.

These superb hand painted and richly famille jaune enamelled pair of vases are highly detailed with six hand painted panels on each vase. The large front and reverse panels show a mother and her young son playing with a kite or balloon. (The painted images are reversed, making the vases true left and hand righted pair).

The sides of each vase have two panels with insects and flora.
The remaining surfaces are wonderfully enamelled in a rich palette of colours with an intricate, continuous pattern of foliage and flowers woven together with tightly repeated scroll work on a pale yellow ground.

This continual decoration is divided with intricate coloured boarders in turquoise and rose pink with fine, delicate hand painted patterns.

The vases are fully signed with bold red character marks on their bases.
Both vases are in perfect condition apart from both slight imperfections to the foot rim with small loses to the glaze where they have been spaced in the kiln with bamboo sticks as part of their manufacture. The details are shown in the photographs.

The pair of vases and their marks are very similar to examples in a good book on Chinese porcelain from the 19th and 20th centuries entitled From the Dragon's Treasure, where on page 144, illustration number 194 shows a similar decorated vase and in the illustrated marks number 197 is identical. Both relate to Republican period pieces.
