Description

A highly detailed pen and ink drawing by Richard Leech laid onto pine panel. To the back is the inscription ‘picture drawn by R. Leech father of Mary Higson Leech married to John Thomas Dawson. Mary was born in Alvaston Derbyshire in 1768 to Richard, the artist, and Mary. She married John Thomas Dawson in Goldington, Bedford on the 5th April 1800.

The scene is a delightful English scene with country house, folly, cattle and a bridge in the foreground. Whilst there is a thistle in the foreground, it remains more likely, as an English artist, that this depicts an English scene.

The bottom right denotes: “R Leech, 1792. Inv. D. Lit’ for ‘invention de delineavit’ suggesting he ‘invented the image and drew it’ perhaps for an engraving.

A truly remarkable and exquisite survivor.

Measuring: 47 cm x 33 cm

English, 1792
