Description

An early 19th c watercolour portrait of Reverend of Reverend Matthew Gardiner, doctor of divinity, of Bothwell, Scotland c. 1830. Gardiner was celebrated by 19th century Scottish poet Janet Hamilton who wrote two poems of Gardiner, ‘On the death of Rev Matthew Gardener (sic) D.D of Bothwell who died 4th June 1865 who died in his nintieth year and 63rd in that parish’ and ‘Address to the Rev Dr Gardner (sic) of Bothwell’ Hamilton was a working class poet in Scotland born in 1795 and married at the age of 13. Hamilton lived in Coatbridge, just six miles from Gardiner’s parish.

The portrait is laid to paper with Gardiner’s details recorded to the back. Unframed.
