English 19th c 'venetian' gate from Castle Ashby

Description
A delightful English wrought iron ‘Venetian’ gate in the 16th century style. The gate is beautifully sculptural and now intended as a wall decoration. Castle Ashby, the ancestral home of the 7th Marquess of Northampton, was built in 1574 to entertain Elizabeth I. The magnificent park surrounding Castle Ashby was landscaped by Capability Brown. He also built the temple that can be seen across the menagerie pond. he present rebuilding of Castle Ashby was started by the 1st Baron compton in 1574 and was continued by his son, created Earl of Northampton. Queen Elizabeth the First’s first visit to the house was in 1600. Like other houses of its date, it was built in an E-shaped floor plan, a deep central porch and flight of steps forming the centre stroke of the E. This was to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I.[2] When King James and his Queen first stayed in 1605, the castle is documented as "Lord Compton's princely mansion", and the household records show employed at this time were 83 household servants, four chaplains, three musicians and the Gardener of Ashby.Provenance Originally at Castle Ashby, Northants
