Description

A rare fairground rounding board dating to the first quarter of the 20th century originally part a children’s carousel The board is most likely be the work of Orton & Spooner, Anderson or Savage all of whom were making such fairground pieces at the time. The convex boards would have surrounded the bottom of a carousel - not all of the boards are present but the surviving words read “Grand” “Horses &”, “Noted”, “For their” “Safety” . The original well-patinated paint and some of the original gilt survives. There are losses to the carvings and paint as must be expected from well used and rare items. On the “Horses” board a later, and much more amateur hand, has tried to recreate the intricate and skilled carving of the previous generation to the moulding at the bottom. A length of wood have been added to the backs to allow for wall-hanging but can easily been removed. These are truly special and important pieces of work. We still have some more of the boards.
