Description

A delightful subject which has seen some restoration (as detailed on the labels to the back) of a boy and his pet dog, Thomas Griffith aged 17 months of Raby, and signed T. Walley 1844. The most popular subjects of portraits are animals and children and this has both. The details of the previous restoration are recorded on the back. There is some paint loss above the subjects heads and the top left has been restored and over painted due to damp in 1930 and 1987. This was carried out by a relative of the original artist - it is subject to craqueleur and some lifting of paint in that area. It will need some consolidation to the patch of and perhaps a revarnish.

The subject matter lifts it above these issues and it is a delightful painting of a very good subject.
