Description

This is one of Erhard and Sohne’s iconic designs from their 1905 catalog. This casket was created to hold biscuits. It is predominantly made of brass with rosewood added to offset the intricate foliate motifs. There are 8 panels around the box, each with a different design. The lid also has a bespoke design that mimics 4 leaves. The bottom of the box has 3 brass feet built into the shape of the casket. It is a gorgeous piece.

What makes the creators of this piece special is that Erhard & Söhne had the world-patent for the manufacture of brass-inlay in 1904. After this date they designed and manufactured high-quality brass-inlaid boxes and items representing the unique German Art Nouveau style at it's peak. Some important works by Erhard & Söhne were illustrated in "MODERN ART OF METALWORK". Bröhan-Museum State Museum of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism (1889-1939), Berlin" published by the Bröhan-Museum in 2001. The Bröhan-Museum is one of the most prominent museums specialising in Art Nouveau and Art Deco and the Berlin Secession.
