Description

A wonderful still life oil on canvas of a jug full of bright, multicoloured flowers, probably Dahlias. The work is beautifully handled in thick impasto paint, particularly the flowers, which burst off the canvas. The use of colour is superb with the flowers contrasting perfectly with the dark blue fabric in the background. The work is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. The painting is signed to the lower left M.E.Oddie. Mary Oddie exhibited between 1931 and 1937 at the Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and at Coolings and Sons Gallery in London. She lived in Uckfield in Sussex. This painting is an excellent example of the artist’s work who was a highly successful still life painter, specialising in these thick impasto works. The piece is framed in an earlier period frame which has a great worn gilded finish. The whole is a fine work with a wonderful dramatic presence. C.1930.
