19th Century Treen Wool Winder

Description

A fine quality 19th century Wool Winder. It is turned from walnut, with boxwood spindles and central pole. The base is a table clamp with a brass screw, which clamps firmly to a table edge. A skein of wool is placed over the spindles, a wooden peg is the released this allows the spindles to fall open according to the size of the skein, holding it firmly as the wool is balled, ready for knitting.
The fine turnings suggest it was owned by a wealthy woman, and it has survived in very good condition. Circa 1830
