Description

Late 19th century wall hanging box/pocket/rack. Made from black laquered papier mache, it is decorated with 2 scenes of fighting Samurai, a fitting tribute to the form known as "japanning", as it was a way of trying to replicate the Japanese art of lacquer.
This wall pocket is in exceptional condition, the applied fine decoration in gold, silver, green and red is vibrant and clear. Circa 1880
