George Robertson Decorated Derby Plate c1796

Description
We have for sale the perfect gift for the collector of unusual early Derby porcelain, an attractive Derby dessert plate, Pattern No. 222 decorated by George Robertson c1796.This very attractive and very unusual Derby dessert plate is decorated with pattern 222 consisting of a gilt dentil rim, deep border of bloom (rose pink) around a border of gilt leaves and buds and the centre painted with a Derby Landscape. The back of the plate carries the Duesbury mark in blue and a description of the view in blue - Hunger Hill near Bredsall (Breadsall, Derbyshire.
In the Derby pattern Books, Pattern No 222 c1796, is as described above and accredited in the pattern books to the landscape artist George Robertson. What makes this plate unusual is that in the Derby Pattern books this pattern should have a central scene painted with ships. In this particular plate it was painted with a Derby view. This suggests that the service from which this plate was derived was commissioned by a client who liked the pattern, but specifically wished it to include landscapes depicting Derby views around Breadsall. It was common in the late 18th and early 19th century for porcelain services to be commissioned to celebrate a special occasion. It seems that Breadsall Priory was bought by an Erasmus Darwin in 1799. It is possible that the service may have been commissioned by him to celebrate his new purchase. This would put the manufacture of the plate to 1799. The Darwin family remained at Breadsall Priory until 1860.
This unusual Derby dessert plate is 8.1 inches (20.5cm) in diameter and is in an aged condition but without any chips cracks or repairs other than a small chip to foot-rim between the 5 and 6 o'clock position.
