Onoto K3 Fountain Pen c1955

Description

We have for sale a stylish Onoto K3 fountain pen dating from between February 1955 and February 1958.

By 1955 the famed Strathendry based Onoto pen manufacturer was in trouble. The Biro was impacting trade and Onoto needed to produce a new range of fountain pens to compete, thus the k series pens were born. There were 4 variants, K1, K2, K3 and K4. K1, K2 and K4 pens had hooded nibs, whilst the K3 pens had lovely open nibs. All of the K series pens used a piston up-filler system in which the interior of the barrel formed the reservoir. In this system the end of the barrel unscrews, forcing the internal plunger down, and when the end is screwed closed the internal plunger moves up within the barrel drawing ink into the reservoir. The last K series Onoto pens were made early in 1958 just before the Strathendry factory closed at the end of February

The pen we have for sale is a turquoise example of the open nib K3 with gold plated fittings. The pen is fitted with the original excellent size 3 (Fine) 14kt Onoto nib. The nib has no visible flaws and writes smoothly. The pen is 130mm long.

The pen is in a good condition, there is some light surface wear to the barrel and cap as one would expect from a 60+ year old pen, along with two small cracks, one to the lip of the lid and one to the barrel bellow the piston filler knob. Both are small, easily missed and do not show up in the photographs.
