Description

We have the pleasure of offering an extremely rare 18th century Derby figure of Flora modelled by Jean Jacques Spangler Circa 1790-95. This figure features in “Eighteen Century Porcelain” by P Bradshaw and is being sold with correspondence between the author and the owner.

This 18th century Derby biscuit porcelain figure depicts "Flora" a young lady holding a garland of flowers. The figure is beautifully modelled and represents the work of Jean Jacques Spangler at its very best.

The base carries the incised Duesbury mark to the base with the incised triangle mark of Joseph Hill. The figure is numbered 390 (until the late 1970s this was an unknown Derby model number) and was modelled by Jean Jacques Spangler.
The design is believed to be based on an jAngelika Kaufmann piece “An opera girl in Paris” (see “Eighteen Century Porcelain” by P Bradshaw)

The figure is approximately 12 and 1/2 inches (31.7cm) high and the base is approximately 10cm in diameter. The figure is in an excellent antique condition. The floral decoration is crisp and undamaged and the only loss seems to be one of Flora's fingertips.

This is a fragile piece of porcelain, but is being sold with free delivery in the UK within 150 miles of Salts Mill Saltaire. The figure is currently being exhibited as part of the selling exhibition of rare Derby, Pinxton, Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain "A journey with William Billingsley" 2016, ISBN: 9783741809903.
