Description

We have the real pleasure of being able to offer for sale a pair of oil paintings by the excellent Victorian animal painter Charles Dudley (1820-1900). Works by Charles Dudley are very well thought of by collectors of animal paintings, but rarely come to the market.

These oil paintings on canvas depict two terriers (subjects used before by the artist) encountering a hedgehog in a wooded scene with a backdrop of a lake with an island. The first of the two paintings (lower painting) depicts the dogs finding the prickly animal and the second depicts their alarm at the curled up hedgehog. The paintings are very well executed, and typical of Charles Dudley, capture the humour of the situation. Any dog owner who has witnessed a dog encountering a hedgehog will recognise the facial expressions of the terriers in these paintings. One cannot look at these painting without feeling amusement. The second (upper) of the two paintings is entitled to the reverse "A Prickly Customer" and both are signed by the artist.

The paintings are presented in matching gilt frames and measure 8 inches x 16 inches (20cm x 41cm) each. They are both in a lovely antique condition with some crazing.
