Description

This is a unique silver topped glass inkwell which sits on an Elkington silver tray, inscribed with this amusing ditty....

For boring in the Tree of Life
And taking out the pith
There's man who can excel the man
Who bears the name of Smith

The tray carries Birmingham 1926 hallmarks together with the Elkington hallmark. It also has an inscription from 'FJ to Alice McCormick CC'. The inkwell itself sits in a rebated square on the tray with chamfered corners. The heavy silver lid which sits on the glass ink bottle also has the same datemark.

It is in very good conditon with no damage or repairs although the tray has some minor scuffing from cleaning over the years. This rare piece of antique desk ware would make a wonderful gift for someone called 'Smith' or a perfect addition to a discerning collection of silver or writing accessories.
