Antique Mauchline Ware String Holder showing a scene of Kirk Braddan, the parish church of Braddan on the Isle of Man.

This sycamore wood string holder comes apart at the middle with a lip around it to easily twist it open. The inside compartment is where a ball of string fits and goes through a 'string hole' found at the top. The original brown cord is looped through two holes on either side of the string hole to carry the holder.

Mauchline ware are lovely pieces of social history. Sold to tourists in the latter part of the 19th century, Mauchline Ware items of this period were usually transfer printed with scenes from popular towns, cities and monuments.

A very unusual example of late 19th century Mauchline Ware. In good original condition with wonderful patina.
