Northern English Lantern Clock by John Waller

Description
A very collectable and also a very affordable Lantern clock, circa early 1700's.The weight driven 30 hour duration movement with it's original Anchor Recoil escapement and long rear-mounted pendulum. Countwheel striking the hours with a large hammer in the top-mounted, cast bell that is hung from a sprung, crossed carrier with a central finial, within the top finials. The front and rear trains are pivoted within the usual 3, flat and upright carrying plates within the framed plates.
The 4 cast brass, corner pillars terminate with ball feet and urn finials.
The dial plate has engraved corners and centre. The upper centre has a space that bears the maker's signature of "John Waller. Preston fecit". This follows the curve of the 6 1/2" diameter chapter ring which has an outer circle, Roman hour numerals around a divided quarter track and also has cruciform half hour marks. The centre has an applied disc with an open tulip flower. Around this is further tulip engraving. The blackened, cut iron hand is very substantial.
The 3 cast brass top frets are of typical sea serpent or 'Dolphin' style, the front one being engraved.
John Waller died in 1724 but in 1718, he took on George Taylor as an apprentice. Lancashire lantern clocks are very collectable because of their rarity.
DateGeorge I :
1710
Dimensions16" high x 5 3/4" wide x 5 3/4" deep excluding chapter ring and rear work.
ConditionVery dirty and dusty. The iron work has been painted black to prevent rusting and the brass case and dial have been coated in lacquer which is breaking down. There appears to be some damage to the dial and it has been repaired. The top finial does not match and the doors, backplate, weight, pendulum, hoop andspikes are missing also, the bell strap has joined legs which are too long. Both chain sprockets appear to be original. The pictures are self-evident. Upon examination, the movement appears to have very little wear and a clean and lubrication may well place it into working condition.
Please note Though the hoop and spikes are missing, the movement can be run if placed on one of our handmade lantern clock brackets, this is also much gentler on the clock as it removes all angular strain. The brackets are made from period English oak and are constructed without nails or screws.
We can of course undertake any corective work required by the purchaser and would be happy to discuss this with you.
