An Outstanding Antique / Vintage Gilt Bronze (or Ormolu) Centrepiece.

Of likely French origin and dating to around the late 19th to early 20th century.
In the Louis XV style.

Brilliantly modelled throughout and fashioned as an old, gnarled oak tree, growing from a naturalistic base, surmounted by two Arabian stallion horses.

The quality of the casting is remarkably fine - the bark of the tree, the texture of the acorns, the flow and 'direction' of the horses hair...right down to the rocks, mosses and grasses of the raised base are all rendered in the most exquisite detail.

The three main branches of the tree incorporate candle sconces and are detachable, with corresponding punched numbers (1, 2 and 3) apparent. Apart from these numbers, the piece appears completely unsigned, with no maker, artist or foundry marks.

Extraordinarily decorative. The gilding (or ormolu) is bright yet displaying some signs of age and wear...especially to some of the oak leaves and to the base. The underside edge similarly revealing some wear and marking from age and use.

When in use, under candlelight, the piece throws out wonderful shadows and the gilding becomes gloriously mellow.

Undoubtedly conceived by a skilled hand and foundry this piece would look absolutely splendid on the dining table, with a bucolic, naturalistic theme all of its own...and surely an odds-on favourite for the horse lover or equestrian.
