Description

A fine and richly decorated antique Dutch walnut linen press, constructed in the late 18th century and extensively inlaid with floral marquetry throughout. The cabinet features a shaped and serpentine cornice above a pair of panelled doors, each inlaid with an oval reserve of flowering foliage tied with ribbon motifs, framed by delicate trailing floral borders.

The lower section comprises three long drawers, also finely inlaid with scrolling foliage and floral sprays, retaining their original pierced brass handles and escutcheons. The cabinet opens to reveal a fitted interior with shelves and a series of shallow drawers, intended for the storage of linens and textiles, and retaining its original layout.

The sides are equally well decorated, with marquetry urns issuing flowering stems and further trailing floral motifs, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout. The cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet and is constructed in solid walnut with lighter fruitwood inlays, typical of Dutch marquetry of this period.

This is a substantial and elegant piece, decorative yet highly practical and well suited to use as a statement storage cabinet within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition

In good antique condition, with general surface wear, minor fading and small losses to the marquetry in places, commensurate with age and use. The interior shows expected wear from storage. The structure is sound, with doors and drawers functioning well. No major restorations observed.
