Campbell Archibald Mellon was a celebrated British painter renowned for his radiant coastal scenes and evocative landscapes of East Anglia. Working primarily in oils, Mellon developed a distinctive style characterised by fluid brushwork, expansive skies, and a masterful sensitivity to light and atmosphere.

Following the First World War, he settled in Gorleston-on-Sea, where the surrounding coastline became his principal inspiration. His paintings frequently depict sunlit beaches animated by small figures, capturing fleeting moments of leisure and the ever-changing qualities of the British seaside. Many works are uniquely inscribed with the exact time and date, underscoring his commitment to recording transient effects of light.

Mellon exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy from 1924 to 1955, and was elected a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil and the Royal Society of British Artists. His work achieved considerable popularity during his lifetime and continues to be sought after for its charm, immediacy, and technical accomplishment.

Today, Mellon’s paintings are held in numerous public collections across the United Kingdom, and he remains one of the most distinctive interpreters of the East Anglian coast.
