Description

Stunning Coromandel Writing Slope/Box
This exotic wood was selected for it's rarity and due to the fascination of the exciting new timbers coming in from all corners of the British Empire. Coromandel wood is also known as Calamander wood and was found mainly in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
The writing slope opens on beautiful chased hinges to reveal an inset gold velvet writing surface.
The two folding writing surfaces that are in the interior open to reveal storage areas, but also there is a secret compartment that opens by pulling at one of the sections that are beside the ink bottles. The brass chasing to the inkwells (originals and fittings is quite exquisite and shows the quality of this slope. Working Bramah lock and key.
The brass plate is inscribed and it appears the box was presented as a marriage gift in 1881. There is a fine brass strip inlay to front, top and back.
