Edwardian Carlton house desk
This Edwardian Carlton house desk was made circa 1900.
Carlton House desks are following designs of the original desk that were in the Carlton House mansion that was owned by George IV in Pall Mall with its gardens abutting St James Park.
A Carlton House desk is like a writing table with its green leather inset writing surface, but has a U-shaped fitting to the rear, fitted multiple drawers, and bowed cupboards, that open to reveal open storage space.
At each end on this U shape fitting are slopes that raise to also reveal storage above the end drawers.
Under the writing surface are 3 mahogany lined drawers.
The desk stands on tapering legs with spade feet.
It is finished all around and so can be used away from the wall or placed in a bay.
Drawings of this type of desk were presented by Hepplewhite in his noted design book, the ‘cabinetmaker and upholsterers guide’ and by Thomas Sheraton in his own book of designs, ‘The cabinetmaker and upholsterers drawing book.’
