Description

The Vaughan family were a family of well known clock makers in Pontypool.
Charles Vaughan, was the most prolific maker, his clocks date from 1742 to 1796,
An average clockmaker of that time could make about 20 clocks
a year.

This silvered clock face bears the signature of Charles Vaughan Pont Pool. M.L 1779
It was a legal requirment at the time that a clock face should bear the name of the  maker and the place of manufacture. (Pont Pool was a fairly common reference, Pont y Pool being a later and now common usage).

Dr William Linnard wrote a detailed of  Charles Vaughan of Pontypool in 2005.
An important work on the early clock makers of South Wales.
