A wonderful large and substantial late 17th/early 18th century continental polychrome carved wooden figure of the Madonna.The figure depicts the Madonna with eyes raised to the sky and an outstretched hand. The hand is carved in a manner indicating the figure originally held a staff-like object. The figure is adorned in green and blue flowing robes and is mounted upon a wooden block base with a portion of the original writing remaining legible to the lower section, which reads 'MADONNA'.
The figure has areas of historic woodworm damage and some splits and cracks to the body commensurate with age. The figure overall is structurally sound and is the surface remains stable.
A great looking piece.
