'The Man Of The World' by Henry Mackenzie (Scottish, 1745-1831). Printed for W. Strahan, 1773. Second Edition.

Foolscap octavo. Both volumes fully bound in tan calf leather with five raised bands and red leather title panels. Some light shelf wear to the extremities and evidence of historic restoration at the boards. Bindings tight.

From the library of Franz Pollack von Parnau (1903-1981), Holocaust survivor, Viennese industrialist, book collector and owner of a significant library at the Palais Pollack-Parnau on Schwarzenbergplatz his bookplate on the front pastedown of both volumes.

Traces of rubbed out pencil inscription to the front endpaper. Some light browning with spotting to the preliminary pages but overall the volumes are in a very good condition throughout.


SYNOPSIS

A two volume sentimental novel, originally published anonymously, by Scottish author Henry Mackenzie. A follow-up to his previous literary success, 'The Man Of Feeling (1771), this novel contrasts a virtuous character with the antagonist, Sir Sindall, a 'man of the world' who pursues selfish, immoral and sensual happiness leading to ruin and betrayal.
