A Hadrill & Horstmann counterbalance desk lamp in original cream enamel finish. A mid-century British design classic, this adjustable task light combines industrial precision (it stays in the position you choose) with elegant modernist lines.
It is perfect for vintage interiors or collectors of iconic twentieth-century lighting becasue it is functional, sculptural, and now increasingly sought-after. This example displays gentle patination consistent with age and the paintwork especially is in fine condition considering its 1950s manufacture. Apart from the counterbalance 'stays where its put' design, I particularly like the way the incorporated handle allows you to pick it up easily, while preventing it from flapping around like an angry swan (cf Anglepoise).
This Hadrill & Horstmann desk lamp is a fine piece of authentic British design, approx 53 cms tall, but as an adjustable lamp the height is variable.

Hadrill & Horstmann began life in London, but soon moved to Godalming where they designed and manufactured their counterbalance desk lights range. These lamps are less known than, say, Anglepoise, but in my experience they are better engineered and stay where they are positioned more than the old Anglepoise lamps, especially if these have been tinkered with.
