Superb quality Victorian stationery box circa 1875. The brass bound hinged lid with a vacant cartouche, opening to a sloped leather writing surface, which hinges to reveal a secret compartment which is activated by a spring mechanism enclosing an arrangement of three drawers, which is shown in the illustration. This superb example comes complete with brass lidded inkwells. Boxes of this quality with finely figured veneers would’ve been made for an important personage and would only have been found in the finest of homes. Ht 17, W 35, D 24 cms.
