You’re bidding on a rare 19th century Swiss duplex watch in a gold-filled hunter case made for the Chinese market. This is a nice, engraved gold-filled duplex pocket watch, made for the Chinese market around the 1850’s. This watch is key wound and is in a very good working condition.
Dial: The white enamel dial has black handwritten Roman numerals, Gold filled hands and a centre second hands. There is a slight hair crack on the dial by the One.
Case: The watch is lying in full hunter gold filled case with nice floral engravings on both sides. The case is in good condition. All the hinges are strong with the case closing tightly. The cuvette is signed Duplex.
Movement: You have a very nice Chinese Duplex high movement with nice floral engravings was made for the Chinese market. It is key wound and is in a good working condition however we cannot guarantee accuracy due to the age of the piece. This movement with bridges and suspended going barrel, polished steel regulator is beautifully engraved all over. “Worthwhile taking a magnifying glass and have a closer look to the craftsmanship of this engraver”.
The Chinese Duplex movement was invented by Charles Edward Jacot in 1830, a movement of the second’s hand, from one second mark to the next, which meant one tooth of the escape wheel passing per second. This was done to give sweep-seconds. The duplex escapement has a slot in the roller on the lower part of the balance staff on the right, that allows a pointed tooth of the escape wheel to rotate to the next position, where it is held up. This causes an upright tooth on the escape wheel to impulse the balance staff.
Duplex Escapements History: The duplex escapement has a slot in the roller on the lower part of the balance staff on the right, that allows a pointed tooth of the escape wheel to rotate to the next position, where it is held up. This causes an upright tooth on the escape wheel to impulse the balance staff. The duplex escapement originated in France circa 1724, and was invented by J.B. Dutertre. The duplex escapements were popular as well among the English makers of good watches from the late 18th to about the mid 19th c, until supplanted by the Detent and Lever escapements. Pierre Leroy is said to have invented it c1750 and in 1782 a patent was granted in London to Thomas Tyrer. It continued to be used in some machine-made American pocket watches. The escape wheel has two sets of teeth at right angle, on for locking and for impulse which is given in one direction only to an impulse pallet on the balance staff. Some continental versions have rest escapement.
