Rare Silver Massey Type 1 by Robert Roskell Liverpool
Hallmarked Chester 1821

This rare silver key wind pair-case pocket watch with a Massey Type 1 lever by Robert Roskell hallmarked Chester 1821. It comes with a key and has a 15-second subsidiary dial.

Dial: The white enamel unsigned dial has Roman numerals and hour markers with outer minute divisions. It has a slight hairline crack by the 11. The dial has blued hands and a subsidiary seconds dial that rotates every 15 seconds at the six. It is collectable one does not find such watches every day.

Movement: The movement is a Patent Edward Massey type 1 lever with a 3-armed balance wheel and a 30-tooth escapement with an engraved cock marked ‘Patent’. It has a diamond end stone and a Stop lever at the 7. It has a dust cover over the movement The movement is signed: “Robert Roskell Liverpool” and numbered: 27472. This watch has just come back from the watchmaker. The movement is in great working condition however, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of an antique pocket watch.

Case: The watch lies in a key wind silver pair-case open-face case. It has a bull’s-eye glass. The inner side of the case is hallmarked for Chester 1821.

Please note: to set the time of the watch you need to open the front screw back case and pull out the lever at the one/two and turn the winder to set the correct time. This method was done specially for the guards travelling on a train for the safety of the people so that they could keep the accurate time. Never pull on the winder as this can break the watch.
