Description

Rare and unusual late 19th Century Meerschaum Pipe with the bowl carved as highly detailed Mephistopheles (the Devil from Faust), with an amber mouthpiece, and original Moroccan leather case with red velvet lining.

Probably German.

Mephistopheles is carved as a characterful Devil with pointy ears, flamboyant moustache & beard, dramatic expression, and wearing a theatrical 17th Century style hat and ruff collar.

A very attractive display piece.

Very good period condition.

The pipe length is 15cm and case: 16cm.

Mephistopheles, also known as Mephostophilis or Mephisto, is a demon featured in German folklore, originating as the chief devil in the Faust legend. Mephistopheles is seen as Hells messenger, making him the servant of the Devil. In the Faust legend, he plays the roles of trickster, liar, cheater, and negotiator, making deals for souls, although he can also be intelligent, ironic, and charming.
