Description

The scrolled red morocco studded leather upholstered oak stool with drop in Afghan carpet upholstered squab cushion survives from the second quarter of the twentieth century being almost certainly retailed by Liberty & Co.

The whole is weighty and remains in good overall original condition, the oak carcass sturdy and the cushion in sound order. There are one or two blemishes and losses to the leather. The upholstery is secured with fabric-covered tacks. We have nourished the leather.

Liberty & Co. of Regent Street, London, has been a well‐known name in fashionable retailing for more than 125 years, with a particularly distinguished place in the history of design in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Of particular note was its role in relation to the Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, often known as Stile Liberty in Italy. They are famous in footstool terms for producing leather-upholstered examples particularly fashioned as animals such as the famous hippo. This stools design is similar to Moorish examples made by Liberty in both the 1890s and early Twentieth century and follows on from the hugely popular Thebes stool.
