Painted Cornish Stick-Back Windsor Armchair c.1810

Description
The early Nineteenth century stick back Cornish Windsor armchair having a flat fronted seat on turned legs joined by an 'H' stretcher, showing the original black paint. In desirable original condition, the chair is structurally sound, with some expected scratches and dents. The paint has wear commensurate with age. The feet have some small losses but have not been retipped. For a similar example refer to Bernard D. Cotton 'The English Regional Chair' SW19-22 & SW37-40.
Cornish Windsor armchairs have certain characteristics such as the straight front to the seat and the armbow made in three separate pieces. The front supports are often very elaborately turned. This example has similarities to Yealmton chairs of Devon, but the shape of the legs and the back, the square flat front to the seat and the thin irregular spindles all indicate that it is Cornish. The chair is most likely fashioned from elm although sycamore was also often used in the westcountry.
An exceedingly handsome chair in wonderfully original condition.
