c.1900 Pine Ebony Canvas Gothic Studwork Trunk

Photos

Description

The large travel trunk having a pine carcass with ebony canvas covering and brass studded crucifix detailing to the front and top, opening to reveal a paper lined interior.

The trunk has some obvious signs of use there are old scratches, only has one of its drop carrying handles, but it is clearly a well-loved, well-travelled, versatile and essential luggage item of Victorian times. The paper interior has some peeling but we believe it to be original.

Trunks date back to pre-medieval times and were made in a large variety of shapes and sizes and from many different materials. Trunks like this one were made in a wide range of sizes and coverings first in London and then spreading to the USA where they became very popular.

This is a rather unusual example that wouldn’t be out of place in any gothic inspired interior.
