Fine c.1900 Oak & Gilt Painted Correspondence Rack

Description

Marked through A to Z in hand painted gilt lettering, the square varnished oak carcass with plinth cornice and six open slanted slats survives from the turn of the nineteenth century.

The structural condition is good with the mahogany showing no signs of infestation, the colour and patination glowing and appealing, the gilt lettering still very apparent. The varnish finish to the oak is peeling in some areas.

This piece would have been wall mounted in a hallway in a very large Victorian country house or more likely in an establishment such as a school.

As such it proves a charming throwback to when paper was more of an integral part of day-to-day life in the schoolroom. NB. Talking and fidgeting will be punished.
