Regency Mahogany Wingback Armchair c.1820-30

Description

The generously proportioned wing back horsehair stuffed and original floral upholstered armchair having rounded back support, arms and flared sides, ring turned legs and original front brass castors with rear sabre legs, survives from the Regency period.

In what we like to describe as ‘country house condition’, the chair is completely original bar the imaginative later addition of a drop in kelim cushion seat to replace the original. There are rips and tears to the fabric in two or three places and thus the chair could be restored fully, though we rather like it as it is.

The original purpose of the flared wings in wing backed armchairs were understood to be to prevent drafts in old houses from reaching ones upper body or to protect the delicate skin of gentrified ladies from the heat of a roaring fire.

A chair of excellence and eccentricity, and one that we love.
