A Rustic George III Country Pine Chair

Photos

Description

The solid antique pine seated chair beautifully and simply constructed, the pine now showing a deep patina and attractive colour. The condition is stable and solid, with only one area of loss to one of the inner front legs, which in no way detracts from neither the stability nor the aesthetic.

The back of a chair always reflects the craftsman’s skills and this also reflects the taste and affluence of the owner. Here, the splat is somewhat unusual in pine as it is modeled on a typical George III dining chair, with the open-fret carved back with a Gothic come Rococo theme. The chairs legs are conventionally chamfered square and are united by six stretchers.

This piece of handiwork is essentially a countrified version of a mahogany dining chair one would have found in the city and would look simply splendid in a farmhouse or country kitchen, or indeed hallway, today.
