Description

The dozen antique hand-coloured lithographs published in 1864 in London for "The Wild Flowers of Great Britain" by Robert Hogg and George W. Johnson, hailing from the third quarter of the nineteenth century and showing an interesting and striking array of British native flowers, each now framed for display.

The lithographs are in generally very good overall order with the hand-colouring all remaining bright. There are some light discoloration marks, minor margin toning but the specimen examples all remain vibrant. The frames and ivory card mounts are recent and in keeping.

The specimens depicted are as follows:

Aromatic Palmate Orchis
Birds-Eye Primrose
Chickweed Winter Green
Climbing Persicaria
White Arcangel
Wallflower
Sweet Scented Colts-Foot
Purple Gromwell
Small Teasel
Ribwort Plantain
Common Ivy
Greater Knapweed

Compiled in 11 volumes and containing 924 coloured plates this book was originally published in 1863. Johnson was a master gardener who penned numerous works on the subject, and founded the Journal of Horticulture, which published this work. A copy of this book sold for $3,245 on Abe books in May 2009 placing it in the top ten most expensive sales on the platform for the month.

Beautifully and painstakingly crafted, and a delightful group to lift any dull wall.
