Description

A fine example of the important work by Hans Jakob Bayr.
The plaque is titled "Minerva Presents the Personification of Painting to the Circle of Arts and Sciences - 'The Seven Liberal Arts'
To the left of the plaque is the goddess Minerva, patron of the arts, who gives her hand to Painting,
To the centre and the right are grouped the Liberal Arts: Grammar, Rhetoric (Philosophy), Geometry, Astronomy, Logic, Music. Superior to all there is the Religion, ready to reward them with the laurel crown those exercising in the underlying fields were distinguished service to the Church.
In the background, there is a cityscape with obelisk and a round temple, on the right a glimpse of trees.

The front is well executed with good detail. the rear is rough cast.
The bronze has a diameter of 29 cm
It weighs an impressive 2.6 kg.

In the style of the workshop of Hans Jakob Bayr (1574 – 1628), Augsburg, Germany, a master silver, and goldsmith.
Several roundels from the same workshop can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Whether it dates to the original period or is perhaps a later Grand Tour piece making it circa 1700's is hard to determine.
I offer it as 'either or' for the sake of honesty.

Either way it is a very collectible piece and with a ring to the rear it is ready to become an excellent display piece.
