Description

Very fine and monumental early 19th century Chinese bronze censer,c1820. I have been collecting for more than 30 years and this is by far the best example I have ever seen. Beautifully cast it weighs over 18kg and from handle to handle is 70cm across and 70cm tall. I have included a picture of it standing next to a tin of food to indicate scale. Given its size and quality it was undoubtedly a temple piece. The handles are highly stylised Phoenix or mythical birds, the detail is lovely with the wings beautifully formed and on the underside the claws of the Phoenix are depicted gripping the body of the censer. The tripod legs are open mouthed fish and the finial on the lid is a stunning coiled dragon. The rim has simple decoration running around the edge. The base has character marks on the underside. The censer has taken on a lovely deep, rich colour following years of handling. Overall condition is good and in line with age and use and there is just the right amount of wear to the feet to show age. There are minor areas of Verdigris on the underside of a handle etc ,as you would expect from an old bronze. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.
